Salt Intrusion as a Function of Estuary Length in Periodically Weakly Stratified Estuaries

نویسندگان

چکیده

Estuarine salt intrusion greatly threatens freshwater supply in surrounding lands. Physical barriers, which reduce the estuary length (L), are widely constructed to control intrusion. Yet, role of L remains unknown. Using a process-based, idealized, semi-analytical three-dimensional model, we systematically investigate for first time this unknown tide-dominated, periodically weakly stratified estuaries. Results show decreasing significantly reduces salinities short estuaries (L < Lw/4, with Lw dominant tidal wavelength), but not long Tidal pumping key importer most estuaries, regardless L. However, substantial decreases relative Lw/4 can change landward from horizontal diffusion. The latter, together gravitational circulation, weakens responses changes and river forcing This study highlights importance considering understanding mitigating

Salt intrusion in multi-channel estuaries: a case study in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

There is a well-tested theory for the computation of salt intrusion in alluvial estuaries that is fully analytical and predictive. The theory uses analytical equations to predict the mixing behaviour of the estuary based on measurable quantities, such as channel topography, river discharge and tidal characteristics. It applies to single-channel topographies and estuaries that demonstrate modera...

Temporal and spatial variability of vertical salt flux in a highly stratified estuary

[1] The temporal and spatial variability of vertical salt flux in the Fraser River Estuary, British Columbia, was investigated observationally, using several different direct and indirect indicators of buoyancy flux. Data were collected from the estuary using shipboard instrumentation, primarily an acoustic Doppler current profiler and a towed conductivitytemperature-depth unit. Direct estimate...

Estuarine Adjustment to Changes in River Flow and Tidal Mixing

The adjustment of estuarine circulation and density to changes in river flow and tidal mixing is investigated using analytical and numerical models. Tidally averaged momentum and salinity equations in a rectangular estuary are vertically averaged over two levels, resulting in equations that are analytically tractable while retaining a broad range of time-dependent behavior. It is found that bot...

Plume outflow intrusion impact on acoustical signal fluctuations in a pre-stratified environment

Existence of outflow intrusion introduces small-scale turbulence that perturbs the vertically stratified character of the sound velocity and causes spatial and temporal fluctuations of the sound propagation. In this experimental study, we have investigated acoustic wave propagation with frequency of 50 kHz in a pre-stratified environment with intrusion of a turbulent plume while the si...
